New Home Fertility Test Reveals Results in Minutes
The Fertell Kit can test a man and a woman within two hours.
June 4, 2007 — -- A new product being released today lets men test their fertility at home for the first time.
The test also includes a test for women that can indicate if they have fertility problems, all in a matter of minutes.
The Fertell Kit, which sells for about $100, is the first to include fertility tests for both men and women.
The female test detects hormone levels and measures egg production. It takes about 30 minutes, and is similar to the FSH test that doctors use.
"The FSH test that we do in our office — that's actually in this kit — is the first test we look for when a woman comes for an evaluation," said Dr. Harry Fisch of the Columbia University Medical Center.
The male test in the kit measures the concentration of moving sperm, a key indicator of sperm health. Male test results show up within 80 minutes.
While doctors said the test is a good first option for couples concerned about fertility, they cautioned that the Fertell Kit may not catch every problem.
"This test is not a guarantee that you're fertile or not," Fisch said. "But it's a great start."
