June 4, 2007 — -- The 26-year-old heiress Paris Hilton literally left the party and was driven by her parents to surrender at a sheriff's station in an industrial area southwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Hilton will serve an expected three-week sentence behind bars for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

"I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters when she strutted the red carpet before turning herself in. "I'm really scared but I'm ready to face my sentence. And even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me."

Inside the MTV Movie Awards, Hilton was the object of the off-color jokes of comedienne Sarah Silverman.

"She is totally gonna get special interest," Silverman quipped.

Hilton squirmed uncomfortably in the audience while Jack Nicholson gave it a big laugh.

Hilton's temporary home is a 12-by-8-foot cell. She'll eat her meals in the cell and be allowed out into the common area for at least one hour a day.

She will be housed in the special-interest section of a two-story concrete jail under a freeway overpass.

"In the morning she'll have cold cereal, hard boiled eggs, some juice perhaps and a fruit," Steve Whitmore of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. "At lunchtime, a sandwich of some kind, chips and a juice drink."

Hilton claimed she turned down the chance to pay money for a more comfortable jail, although the judge had ruled out alternative imprisonment.

"Well, I did have a choice to go to a pay jail, but I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that I'm not," she told reporters. "And that's why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it and I'm going to be treated like everyone else. I'm going to do the time. I'm going to do it the right way."
