What Are The Most Important Nutritional Principles For Someone With Type 2 Diabetes?

Question: What are the most important nutritional principles for someone with type 2 diabetes?

Dr. Rena Wing answers the question: "Nutrition Principles For Type 2 Diabetes?"

Answer: Nutrition therapy is very important for preventing diabetes and preventing cardiovascular disease in individuals who have diabetes. To accomplish these goals, the focus of nutrition therapy is on, first of all, trying to achieve blood sugar levels that are as close to normal as possible. Second goal is to achieve blood pressure levels as close to normal as possible. And finally the third goal is to achieve blood lipid levels that reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition to those health goals though, it's very important that you identify a diet that you can live with for the rest of your life, that takes into account your own food preferences and your lifestyle.
