Michael Acker, M.D., Chief, Cardiovascular Surgery Division; Surgical Director, Heart Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Programs, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; Professor of Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

Question: What are the advantages of bypass surgery and the disadvantages of bypass surgery -- as compared with stents?

Dr. Michael Acker answers the question: 'Bypass Surgery Versus Stents?'

Answer: The advantages of bypass surgery compared to stents is that, in general, a surgical re-vascularization is longer lasting than a stent procedure. The disadvantages of coronary bypass surgery is that it is surgery. And in that, that is a surgical trauma to the body, a cut if you will, one that it will take a few weeks to recover from. But most people, as you know, do it very, very well.
