What Kinds Of Doctors Deal With Abnormal Heart Rhythms?

Question: What kinds of doctors deal with abnormal heart rhythms?

Paul Friedman, M.D., Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Answer :Our hearts depend on electrical signals to continue the regular heartbeat. An irregularity of the heartbeat is called an arrhythmia. Cardiologists are doctors who specialize in heart disease, and all cardiologists will have some experience dealing with heart rhythm abnormalities. An arrhythmia may cause the heart to beat too quickly, too slowly or irregularly.

Cardiologists who do additional training specializing in electrical disorders of the heart, or arrhythmias, are called electrophysiologists. Just as you may call an electrician to your home if you have an electrical problem in the home, an electrophysiologist, or heart rhythm specialist, is a doctor who has done additional training in using medications, catheter treatments or implantable devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators for treating irregular heartbeats.
