If Breast Cancer Is Common On My Father's Side Of The Family, Does That Increase My Risk For Breast Cancer?

Question: If breast cancer is common on my father's side of the family, does that increase my risk for breast cancer?

Dr. Caro answers the question: 'What about breast cancer on my dad's side?'

Answer: Definitely. It's one of the common misconceptions that has been prevalent in misunderstanding about risk in general, is that the dad's side of the family doesn't matter. And you get half of your genes from your mom and half of your genes from your dad. So when there's an inherited potential for an increased risk of breast cancer, then it matters just as much that it comes from the father's side as the mother's side.
