Should All Breast Lumps Be Removed?

Question: Should all breast lumps be removed? Does the size or shape of the lump mean anything?

Diagnosis and Screening

Answer: All lumps don't necessarily need to be removed. By using this term – lumps -- people are lumping into one category many different changes in the breast. The normal glandular structure of the breast may feel lumpy from time to time, particularly as the breasts are more engorged before the menstrual periods. But if there's a persistent mass or lump in the breast it should be evaluated.
