Should I Schedule Surgery Around My Menstrual Cycle?

Question: Should I schedule my breast cancer surgery around my menstrual cycle?

Barbara Smith, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center

Answer: Over the years there had been concerns raised that the timing of surgery in the menstrual cycle could affect the chance of tumor cells spreading to other parts of the body. The problem has been that different studies have shown different times of the menstrual cycle to be better or worse and for the most part it really does not seem to associate survival with timing of the surgery. So in general, you can schedule your surgery based on other factors than your menstrual cycle.
