Buy Buy Baby: Woman Charged for Purchasing Newborn

A Pennsylvania woman has been charged for allegedly paying $1000 for a newborn.

July 18, 2008— -- A Pittsburgh-area woman paid $1,000 for anewborn baby and then claimed she gave birth to it, police said.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg, was charged withendangering the welfare of a child. She was charged 18 years ago ina plot to steal another woman's infant.

In a criminal complaint, police said they were called Thursdayafternoon to West Penn Hospital after getting a report of a womanwith a baby that wasn't hers.

Medics transported the woman to the Pittsburgh hospital a fewhours earlier after responding to a call that a woman with a babyneeded assistance.

Tests at the hospital showed Curry-Demus wasn't the mother,police said.

Curry-Demus told police she befriended a pregnant woman andarranged to buy the baby after she miscarried in June and didn'twant to upset her mother, according to the criminal complaint.Authorities said she told them she paid a woman named Tina $1,000for the baby.

Curry-Demus said Tina came to her house on Wednesday with thenewborn wrapped in a towel, police said. Curry-Demus said shecalled the medics Thursday because the baby was still dirty frombirth.

Authorities said the baby's umbilical cord was attached when thenewborn was taken to the hospital.

The baby will remain at the hospital until authorities determinewho her mother is.

"We don't know where she got the baby, whether someone gave itto her or how she came to have that child with her," police Cmdr.Thomas Stangrecki told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "But shedidn't give birth."

Curry-Demus is scheduled to be arraigned in Pittsburgh Friday.

"I didn't do nothing," Curry-Demus told reporters as she wasput into a police car Thursday.

Curry-Demus pleaded guilty in 1991 to aggravated assault afterstabbing a Wilkinsburg woman in an alleged plot to steal thewoman's infant. Curry-Demus, then known as Andrea Curry, wassentenced to 10 years' probation.
