Around the world, millions of commuters use subways to get to work every day. But many people take them for granted, overlooking their historical and architectural significance. Here are some of the world's most notable subways.
City Hall Station, New York City
The crown jewel of the New York City subway system, which opened in 1904, was the City Hall station in lower Manhattan. It featured Guastavino tile, brass-coated chandeliers, large skylights and colorful glass mosaics. It was built as a showpiece of the system, but it was closed in 1945. It is still standing today but is not open to the public, making it one of the best-kept secrets of one of the world's most famous subways systems.
