Jan. 8, 2008— -- Producers of the Golden Globes have said that the show would go on, without stars crossing striking writers' picket lines. But what sort of show will it be?

"I think a Golden Globes without actors is kind of like going to the zoo and not having any animals. That's the whole fun of the event," said Dina Sansing, the entertainment director of US Weekly Magazine.

The Screen Actors Guild said that after extensive talks with Golden Globe nominees, the "actors will not cross WGA picket lines to appear on the Golden Globe Awards as acceptors or presenters."

The upshot? John Travolta, nominated for his role in "Hairspray" won't be there. Neither will George Clooney, who's nominated for "Michael Clayton." Julia Roberts, nominated for "Charlie Wilson's War," will be a no-show. As will Katherine Heigl, who was nominated for her role on "Grey's Anatomy."

"You miss the whole glamour of the event. We tune in because we want to see what they're wearing. We want to see their reaction when they win," Sansing said.

The Golden Globes are the first big show of the Hollywood award season. The writers' strike has already taken a bit out of scripted television shows, but now it's reaching into the world of film and the business of Hollywood. It's also sending a very big message to the Oscars.

As for late-night TV shows, they are back -- sort of. Jimmy Kimmel and Jay Leno are having such a hard time lining up big-name actors who will cross picket lines, the two hosts have decided to be guests on each other's show.

And for the writers, after the long holiday break, they go back on the picket lines starting tomorrow, but there's no Hollywood ending yet.
