Do You Think Mary Poppins Lied?

Viewers Respond to Robert Krulwich's Report on the Beloved Disney Nanny

We received an overwhelming online response to the piece Robert Krulwich did last week on Mary Poppins, and whether she really said "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" backwards.

Was Poppins' pronunciation of "super-cali-fragil-istic" simply quite atrocious?

Some of you took this rather seriously.

Watch the original video here.

A viewer named Don e-mailed, "Shame on you for calling Mary Poppins a liar!"

Another viewer, Barbara, wrote, "I took great offense to your Mary Poppins bashing."

And then there were folks, like Dave, who pointed out, "What she actually did was break the word into two syllable parts, and reverse the order in which they were said — except for the word super which she actually did reverse."

As for Krulwich, he is aware of what she was doing, and appreciates all the e-mail his report occasioned. He responded that, when someone says she is saying something backwards, that should really mean backwards.

"That aside," said Krulwich, "I have the deepest respect for Ms. Poppins, and especially, for her umbrella."
