Today, President Bush and Prime Minister Rasmussen meet in the Oval Office and speaks to the press.

Sen. Kerry holds a rally with veterans in Green Bay this morning before heading to Washington, where he speaks to the Congressional Black Caucus.

Ralph Nader is in Vermont today. No word on whether he'll meet with Dean again.

DNC Chairman McAuliffe holds a news conference to critique President Bush's veterans policy.

Also today, U.S. Trade Representative Zoellick signs CAFTA and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Myers delivers the commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Tomorrow, President Bush and Sen. Kerry attend the dedication of the World War II memorial, where President Bush will speak, and both deliver the weekly radio addresses. Also on Saturday Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld delivers the commencement address at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

On Sunday President Bush welcomes the leadership of Rolling Thunder, which recently endorsed him, at the White House. Sen. Kerry is in Washington with no public events.

On Monday President Bush participates in a wreath laying at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and speaks at Arlington National Cemetery.

The must-reads:

The Kerry campaign's plans to expand the battleground are moving past Louisiana and Colorado next week. Per the AP's Liz Sidoti, when Kerry begins $17 million worth of issue-based advertising on Wednesday, one of the states will be Virginia. LINK

(As Kerry begins advertising in Virginia), the Wall Street Journal Notes that Moody's is rewarding Virginia Gov. Mark Warner for his "hard-won budget victory over anti-tax state and national Republicans, restoring the state's triple-A bond rating yesterday."

CAFTA: "Today's signing of a free-trade deal with five Central American nations brings to three those awaiting Congress's ratification; another with Bahrain isn't signed. Backers have scant hope for final votes, given lawmakers' election-year jitters about job losses. A deal with war ally Australia could pass, but Democrats say the Central America pact is 'on a midnight train to nowhere.'"

Alternative Minimum Tax reform going nowhere because of deficit concerns, the Journal reports.

Washington Wire also picks up on Kerry's new line of attack on Bush, blaming "mismanagement of the war" for high gas costs.

The Wall Street Journal's ed board chides President Bush for not being more candid with Americans on Monday that U.S. overtures to the UN "won't mean any more foreign troops to help us in Iraq." According to the Wall Street Journal, sometimes they think it would be good of Kerry won "just so the Europeans could reject his pleas for help too. The hard but simple truth is that to emerge from Iraq with honor and victory our only real ally is the Iraqi people … . We wish Mr. Bush had proposed a 'two-step' process — keep killing our enemies and organize the elections as soon as possible ourselves … "

The Washington Post's Mike Allen reports that Bush's Thursday health-care event on health care information technology at Vanderbilt "was part of a coordinated effort between the White House and the Bush-Cheney campaign to appeal to suburban swing voters who are technologically savvy."LINK

Team Kerry will be rather pleased the Toner/Sanger lead in the New York Times. LINK

"Senator John Kerry mounted a broad new attack on the Bush administration's handling of national security on Thursday by accusing the president of undermining 'the legacy of generations of American leadership' with a foreign policy that has abandoned the alliance-building of the post-World War II era."

And Jodi Wilgoren of the New York Times serves up a truly awesome side dish of the players (and how they play together) that make up John Kerry's foreign policy team. We wonder if Rand Beers, Sandy Berger, Richard Holbrooke, and Jamie Rubin will roll their eyes simultaneously when reading Secretary (oops) Senator Biden's quotes. LINK

Here's a sample: "Mr. Biden follows up their frequent conversations by sending lengthy memorandums and drafts of entire speeches to Mr. Kerry via fax or e-mail. 'I'm not going to go through a campaign where I get filtered through three staff,' he explained. 'If John wants to know what I think, I tell him directly what I think.'"

Some of the Democratic giddiness in the House over the president's sliding poll numbers and the potential to go two for two in special elections this year seems to have rubbed off on the New York Times ' Carl Hulse. He pens a D-trip dream of a story questioning whether (during this 10-year anniversary season of the Republican takeover in that body) history may repeat itself. LINK

In yet another setback to the Boston officials planning for the Democratic National convention, Transportation Commissioner Andrea d'Amato announced yesterday that she would step down at the end of June — less than one month before the convention, the Boston Globe reports LINK

The probably should reads:

At the Green Party's national convention in Milwaukee next month, delegates are faced with a choice. Should they nominate independent candidate Ralph Nader — the man who has shunned them after giving him their nomination in both 1996 and 2000? The AP reports. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Warren Vieth put in some Buckeye State time after last week's jobs numbers showed Ohio not fully participating in the economic recovery underway. LINK

"Though Ohio's unemployment rate has fallen slightly in recent months, the state is still near the bottom of the economic heap. Though there are signs of life, they may be too little, and too late, to erase the gloom and frustration caused by the state's three-year slide, some analysts say."

Greg Gordon of the Minneapolis Star Tribune curtain-raises Sen. Kerry's trip to Minnesota next week, where he will publicize a "50-state network" of veterans working for his campaign, and will attend a rally of several thousand veterans in the Twin Cities. LINK

American Family Voices/Veterans for Common Sense have produced a documentary, "Honor Betrayed," and a report aimed at veteran voters. The report highlights "morale" and "readiness" problems in the military. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Peter Wallsten looks at the perks of being the incumbent — Air Force One and the ability to schedule fundraising and campaign events around official appearances. LINK

Ed O'Keefe's Kerry campaign report:

SEATTLE, WASH., May 27 — Just over a week ago, Sen. John Kerry stood before rain-soaked thousands gathered in and around Portland's Pioneer Courhouse Square, and, pointing to an enormous American flag behind him, implored the crowd, "We're all in the same boat here in America, and we need to come together now to lift this country up, not tear it down … We are the can-do people, we are the can-do country, and we need to get the job done."

Kerry borrowed the key phrase from Langston Hughes and for the second time that day asked the throng of cheering supporters to "Let America be America again."

As the Puget Sound rattled in the background of the port of Seattle's Pier 62 on Wednesday, Kerry again turned to a rain weary crowd to declare, "This is the most important election of our lifetime and we need to make a difference. We need to re-claim our own democracy; we need to make government work for people again. I ask you to help us let America be America again and make it America for all Americans."

At one point in a stump laden with calls for a "new conversation with America," the presumptive Democratic nominee even tied the unifying concept to energy independence, the campaign's theme of the day, saying, "As long as we are dependent on oil from other nations, we are not masters of our own destiny; we are not independent, we are not free. I believe the American spirit and the American dream says we need to let America be America again by pushing the curve of science and technology and decide that no young American in uniform ever, ever will be held hostage to America's dependence on oil in the Middle East."

Kerry has invoked the poet's line nine times in nine days lending credence to the Wall Street Journal's David Rogers' theory that Kerry may be building the general election campaign theme many Democrats had hoped would soon appear.

The Senator first used the line in a 50th Anniversary of Brown vs. the Board of Education speech influenced by former Clinton speechwriter Terry Edmonds.

The theme, though not the line itself, had not been uttered since that boisterous downtown Portland rally but in three days back on the campaign trail this week, it has appeared almost every opportunity.

Even Teresa Heinz Kerry got into the act at Seattle fundraiser on Wednesday night, concluding nine minutes of remarks by declaring, "I would like to see America be America again; I would like to see Americans be Americans again."

Kerry has long flirted with the concept of a "conversation with America" though has struggled at times to build a consistent stump message. In February, the "Real Deal" stump speech slowly disintegrated into a mesh of generic themes without a distinct focus.

After the Feb. 10 primaries, Kerry rarely talked of "Benedict Arnold" companies, and it has taken the candidate until recently to discover a comfortable way of discussing the same subject while limiting offense to potential corporate supporters.

Similarly, while "Bring it on" arguably brought Kerry the Democratic nomination crown, the once-signature line now hardly ever makes a public appearance. And, perhaps deemed too confrontational in its former incarnation, when used "Bring it on" is no longer a direct foreign policy reference.

Nevertheless, while Kerry's "conversation" has taken three months to start, for the first time since wrapping up the nomination, the candidate is beginning to look and sound more comfortable with his stump material.

And while rough edges remain, in a recent conversation aboard the Kerry campaign's new permanent plane, a television producer Noted, "(The campaign is) a marathon not a sprint."

The candidate looked up with a smile and concurred in both the direction of senior staff and the traveling press, "That's what I keep telling everyone."

In a Seattle speech kicking off an 11-day focus on national security on Thursday, Kerry looked backward to gaze forward. The Senator quoted Teddy Roosevelt twice, Abraham Lincoln once, his father, Richard Kerry, and an even borrowed a line from the speech Kennedy was set to deliver on the day of his assassination.

Kerry continues the security theme with a morning event in Green Bay, Wis., before flying to Washington for the opening of the World War II Memorial on Saturday and still unannounced Memorial Day plans.
